As a Business Analyst, your job is to help improve processes and systems through conducting research and analysis, to come up with solutions and recommendations that will solve business problems or help deliver change. You will do everything, from running workshops, gathering requirements, creating user stories and epics as well as supporting large scale programmes to succession, dealing with a real variety of people and stakeholders on the projects.
As Product Manager or Product Owner you will guide the success of a product, whilst leading a cross-functional team to make improvements and implement changes. Within technology companies in particular this is an important role, as you will define the strategy, vision, roadmap and features to ensure successful product launches. It’s also not uncommon to play a key role in marketing, forecasting and P&L responsibilities.
As a Project or Programme Manager, you will be very organised, process driven and adaptable in your approach to ensure a project is delivered successfully from inception to launch. It will be your job to understand the needs of both the business and the client, create an actionable plan and make sure the plan is implemented on time, budget and scope, whilst minimising any risk to the final outcome. You are the lynchpin which holds everything together, the go-to person, able to change a sometimes chaotic and reactive work environment into a more structured and efficient one. This will involve liaising with colleagues and clients alike, often bridging the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders to deliver success.

For example it is important that you can communicate clearly to developers and designers, senior management and clients alike and show strong organisation skills as a lot of the work is detail oriented and systematic. You will need to be strategic and analytical, however being creative is just as important to consider new ways of working and solve problems with fresh ideas. You will also enjoy taking ownership of a product from start to finish and take pride in a job well done.
Your role is imperative to a business and you are a key driver in the successful delivery of the project, ensuring everybody knows what they need to do, timelines are clear, statements of work are processed, each task is prioritised and you will mitigate risk throughout the project. Your role will be varied and you lead and manage teams, working with a variety of teams, stakeholders, deciding how the work will be completed bringing teams together to achieve the shared goal, you are the lynchpin that holds everything together.

At entry level, with the basic skills that are required for a Business Analyst, the salary would be anywhere between £20k - £28k. At the mid-level, you can expect salaries around the £30k - £45k mark. At the more senior level, salaries will start from £45k. At senior level, your salary would start from £50k and Head Of £65k.
Product roles start from £30k and moving into mid-level roles, salaries are in the region of £40k - £60k which will come down to your experience and the sort of products that you have managed. Senior roles start at £60k and for Director level/ Head of you can expect salaries starting at £80k.
At entry level, with the basic skills that are required from a Project Manager, the salary would start at around £20k - £28k. At the mid-level, you can expect salaries around the £35k - £50k. At the more senior level, salaries, typically exceed £50k- £55k. At the Head of/Director level, salaries tend to start at around £70k.

As you will be working closely with various internal teams and stakeholders, you have strong communication and interpersonal skills and are able to work in cross-functional teams. You need to be organised and have a solutions oriented approach.
You are proficient in research and analysis, are able to come up with ideas, have strong execution skills and are a decisive person that works well under pressure. You have prioritisation skills; knowing what to prioritise in what order, with the ability to relay that message to technical colleagues, understanding how to work with other teams to get the best out of them and sell solutions. You are naturally supportive and are able to get everyone’s buy-in, so you’re all working towards the same goal. You are able to manage cross-functional teams, a good communicator that can manage internal and external stakeholders and regularly meets customers to ensure they’re happy with the product, to obtain feedback. You possess a strong technical understanding to bridge the gap between tech team and other teams, translating jargon into plain English.
As a Project/ Programme Manager you have interpersonal skills, the ability to find the right balance between building, growing and enhancing internal and external relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. You have excellent time management skills, as your role is to determine how people spend their time, ensuring delivery of projects within time, budget and scope. You are skilled at risk management, are able to spot, avoid and mitigate risk, so everything runs smoothly. Technical understanding and the ability to work closely with development teams, understanding project limitations, capabilities and then communicating through to non-technical teams in a digestible form is what you do.
What qualifications does it take?
You don’t necessarily have to have any formal qualifications to become a Business Analyst. However, it is recommended to have industry specific qualifications such as BCS Foundation certification, AgileBA Foundation and/or AgileBA Practitioner.
The most common qualification within product is CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner).
Prince2 and Agile are almost always essential. Other project management qualifications which are desirable/sought after include Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Scrum Master (CSM). However, it is possible to enter the field of digital project management without any formal qualifications and get certified on the job/ in free time.
