Fully remote role as part of a unique and growing global start-up.

Invent new tools and systems, alongside novel applications for drones, LiDAR and more.

On the ground work in some of the most iconic natural landscapes, including South America, and Asia.

The client’s mission is centred on making ecosystems functional, at scale. With the aim of delivering carbon projects with integrity at scale, the team are working to provide end to end solutions that deliver high quality carbon projects to market. The team are able to provide this through their unique method of training algorithms on ground truthed data.

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing cutting-edge algorithms and models to apply computer vision, object-based recognition, and other machine learning tools to remote sensing data with the purpose of better understanding, describing, and analysing complex ecosystems and landscapes.

What you’ll be doing:
The team have developed an in-house platform and are building a suite of tools that create a step-by -step change in accuracy, speed, automation, and insight levels from project assessment through to development and project completion.
In your role as Remote Sensing Lead, you will:

  • Develop and implement advanced machine learning algorithms, both supervised and unsupervised. These will be specifically tailored for remote sensing applications, such as land cover change detection and classification. You will work with a variety of data sources, including radar, optical sensors, high-resolution imagery, and ground truth observations.
  • Evaluate and select the most suitable machine learning algorithms for each specific remote sensing application, considering factors such as efficiency, accuracy, and computational requirements.
  • Apply deep learning techniques to analyse remote sensing imagery and extract meaningful information. This includes exploring and utilising models and architectures relevant to feature extraction, training and fine-tuning, and optimisation.
  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders to identify research questions. You will design research studies and implement solutions.
  • Maintain documentation for code, methods, and results. This will include documenting the rationale behind algorithm choices, parameter settings, and data pre-processing steps.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in remote sensing techniques and machine learning, particularly where they relate to land cover change.
  • Participate in project planning, execution and reporting. You will prepare technical reports and presentations.
  • Provide training and support to other team members on data collocation, curation, sampling, and machine learning.

What experience you’ll need to apply:
This role requires a candidate who has a combination of technical expertise in remote sensing, computer vision, and machine learning. You will also have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and will be happy to work in a fully remote role. It would be the clients preference to have candidates based in the UK/EU or South America.

This role will be perfect for you if you have:

  • A strong background in remote sensing, machine learning, deep learning, and/or computer vision.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, such as Python, and a familiarity with machine learning frameworks/libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras.
  • Experience with remote sensing data, including satellite imagery, LiDAR, and/or aerial imagery.
  • A solid understanding of object-based recognition techniques and image segmentation algorithms.
  • Team management experience, having previously supervised or led a small team in remote sensing/machine learning focused roles.
  • Very good written and spoken English.

It would be desirable for candidates to have the following experience:

  • Experience in specialised remote sensing libraries or tools like GDAL.
  • Experience in remote sensing data analysis, particularly in land cover change detection, and classification using radar, optical sensors, and high-resolution imagery.
  • Experience working in a start-up environment or working for an environmentally focused company.

What you’ll get in return for your experience:
Salary and compensation differ from location to location, please get in touch to find out more.
This is a full-time (40 hours a week) and permanent role. The role is fully remote, with numerous opportunities to go and work with the team overseas (predominantly Indonesia, but also elsewhere).
Please note that the client cannot offer VISA Sponsorship, and you will need full rights to work in the country you are based in.
