If you’re looking for a new challenge where you can use your development skills to help to save lives then this is one for you!  One of Bristol’s thriving start-ups is looking for a passionate Senior Software Engineer to help them build a fully funded medical diagnostic product which will help treat patients with one of the world’s biggest killer illnesses.  This incredible solution uses sophisticated machine learning tech as well as a wide palette of languages and tools; they’ll look to you to help shape their technical direction and deliver a game-changing product to market.

What skills will you need

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an engineering discipline, such as computer science, software engineering or electronics engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive experience in programming/software engineering using Python.
  • They also use Unix shell, JS/React, R, C++ and containers (Docker) as part of their tech stack so a good coverage on some of these is desirable.
  • Ability to develop plans and schedules for a complex project and adhere to them through to completion.
  • A strong track record of developing complex, secure software systems and applications.
  • Experience and willingness to adopt a user-driven, iterative approach to development, including experience with lean and agile methodologies.
  • Prior experience coordinating between different scientific and technical development teams – including both software and hardware – to achieve product development goals.
  • Experience with DevOps technologies and processes, such as Docker, CI/CD, automated testing, Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of secure programming and DevSecOps.

What you’ll be doing

You will be responsible for driving their software development efforts, helping to shape the technical direction of the business and successful execution of their software projects. Core duties will centre around the design, development, testing and deployment of the software platform underpinning their diagnostic system.  You will be integrating their Python-based machine learning code (alongside their machine learning team) and developing high performance tools, user-facing components/GUI and solutions to store and manage large-scale genomic datasets for analysis.

You’ll be working closely with the CTO and Head of Engineering to ensure that software meets compliance standards and ISO regulations with requirements traceability, software verification, testing and qa.  It’s likely that you’ll also take part in the deployment and scaling of software systems on cloud infrastructure and they’ll look to you to encourage and implement best practices in software engineering tools and techniques, including automated testing, code reviews and CI/CD.
