Web Developer

— PHP, Retro eCommerce business

Salary: £20K - £30K
Location: Bristol
Type: Permanent
Ref: 7201

A highly successful eCommerce business is looking for a new Web Developer to join their team. Based in Bristol, the company is around 20 strong and are currently investing heavily in expanding. New offices are being built with scope to grow and the development team will be one of the core focusses for attracting new talent. It’s a fun and relaxed atmosphere, dress down and with a big point made around work / life balance. They’re interested in staff that will take an active interest in other parts of the business, as well as suggesting new products, new cool bits for the offices or whatever else may pop into your mind that would make everyone’s day-to-day’s that bit more enjoyable!

What skills you’ll be needing

This role could suit a talented and ambitious developer looking for their first commercial role or someone that has a proven amount of experience already and wants to bring that into a new company. You’ll need strong skills with PHP and MySQL, as well as FE knowledge with HTML5, CSS3, XML and at least a working knowledge of JavaScript (jQuery) and Ajax. An understanding of API’s, as well as knowledge of W3C, accessibility and relational databases will all be useful. You’ll get bonus points if you have any skills with Linux/Apache operating from the command line, SSL security technology or knowledge of mobile app development on either IOS or Android. Personally, you’ll need to be happy to get involved suggesting new products and ways to improve the business. There is a big push at the moment to bring in Agile so any experience in an Agile environment previously would be great.

What you’ll be doing

Your primary day-to-day work will be focussed around web production, programming and systems management. The system is based around PHP & MySQL but has had over £1m spent on developing it so it’s now effectively entirely bespoke software. You’ll be building to high standards, the templates provided to you by the creative team. You’ll also be building and maintaining server-side applications, including databases. There will be a need for you to help provide creative solutions and offer tech based guidance for new projects and to help to scope any ideas for changes within the business. Part of your role will also be to keep up to date with emerging tech and suggest anything that would benefit being brought into the business. As mentioned previously, you won’t be pigeonholed to strictly development if you don’t want to be and so you can get actively involved with other teams where you show interest or talent. This includes suggesting new item and product ideas as all the current team like to get involved with!

What you’ll get in return for your talents

This is the chance to join a really fun business at a time when they are looking to begin their next major stage of growth. There’s a relaxed, yet committed, atmosphere that’s dress down and has a real focus on work / life balance (nobody is allowed to work past 5:30!). There’s £2m being put into new office space that will include break-out areas with retro games consoles and other fun bits. On top of the competitive salary, there’s a staff discount and yearly credit (£100), an extra day’s holiday per each year of service, pension contribution, lunch clubs, socials and other extras i.e. an office go-karting league! As the business grows, development will be a key focus so there’s plenty of chances for future progression too.
