Head of Online Merchandising

This new role has come about from the continued fast growth of an established eCommerce offering. The Head of Online Merchandising is a leadership role managing a team of Online Trading / Merchandising professionals. Driving strategy, best practice and process, you will be the go to in the team for all things eCommerce trading and merchandising.

Youll work closely with the MD and Head of Digital Marketing to align the Online Trading strategy with the rest of the business, combining an analytical approach with your eCommerce experience to put a strong strategy in place. eCommerce is the sole area of focus for future growth so its an exciting proposition in terms of where you can take your career.

The day to day will be highly varied: attending / leading trading reporting meetings, reviewing analytical data with the trading team to tweak strategy, working on best practice for product content and the process of getting this online and developing your team to be the most successful they can be. Its a really rare role on the South Coast so one not to be missed!

What experience youll need

  • Online / eCommerce trading experience from a retail brand.
  • Strong best practice trading principles and the ability to direct others based on these goals.
  • Able to work at pace in a constantly changing environment - priorities can change quickly so you might come from a small / medium size business where this is the norm.
  • Confident communicator at a range of levels from MD to Junior Executives. Line management experience isnt a must but would be a distinct advantage.
  • Highly analytical mindset to spot opportunities for future improvements to the customer journey.
  • Excellent understanding of promotions and how to drive these for best sellers / slow movers.
  • People person and solid team manager.

Youll also be the key influencer in business projects that impact the website.  Finally, youll be expected to stay abreast of best practice and the latest industry developments, suggesting ways to improve the website based on this.    What experience youll need to apply Experience in ecommerce trading, ideally within an FMCG business.  Proven track record of delivering online sales growth within the UK market Experience of managing people & working with external agencies to implement projects. Key understanding of web analytics; tools, reporting and insights.   Experience of optimising websites for good SEO performance.  Strong commercial acumen; a hunger to identify opportunities to improve performance and overall online sales growth Experience of content management, social media and copywriting with an attention to detail A credible, confident approach to problem solving. A good communicator and team player who must be prepared to roll up their sleeves. A friendly and collaborative working environment too, where everyone is really passionate about eCommerce and Digital.  What you'll be doing The roles will vary depending on your level of experience, however, both are hands-on so there are some elements where similar skills are required. Joining an established team of 8 within eCommerce, you'll report into the eCommerce Manager and work alongside other Online Merchandisers to optimise the overall customer journey. Being pureplay this is massively important to the team, therefore really rewarding that your efforts to drive conversions will deliver significant commercial outcomes.  There is a continual process of analysis and implementation in the Online Merchandising team. Youll ensure that the product imagery and text are correct, uploading content through the Magento CMS and writing SEO friendly product descriptions. Content writers are also on hand for bigger projects. This requires real attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple spreadsheets to organise your categories effectively.  The more strategic aspect of this role, which will form a great element of the Senior eCommerce Merchandiser position, is the ability to draw insights from the analytics data on customer behaviour. What categories are doing well, and which products are underperforming - and why is that? Youll have a real curiosity in diving into customer data and using this to drive overall strategy. More senior members will be comfortable discussing weekly and monthly performance with stakeholders across the business.  What experience you'll need Online merchandising experience from an eCommerce setting.  Given the close attention to data in both roles, someone who is really confident in managing spreadsheets and using this to handle data is key (the team love a good spreadsheet!). Being comfortable with various formulae and techniques such as vlookups.  Fantastic attention to detail, especially with imagery and product descriptions.  Good commercial awareness and understanding of how eCommerce Merchandising impacts online turnover.  Excellent problem solving ability and a passion to roll up your sleeves and get the job done.  A massive passion for eCommerce!
