Senior Developer (PHP, Symfony)

An innovative cyber security business in Oxfordshire is looking for a Senior PHP Developer to join their expanding team on a fully remote basis (aside from monthly/bi-monthly meetings onsite in Oxfordshire) and work on the company’s ground-breaking product. Their product focusses on a suite of educational cyber security tools used by major programmes worldwide and has seen huge success already, with nearly 300,000 users and growing. As a Senior Developer you’ll  be key to taking the business into the next phase of their exciting product roadmap throughout 2020 and beyond.

What skills you’ll need

  • Significant development experience with proven background in PHP. Knowledge of other server-side languages is a plus.
  • Experience working with Symfony.
  • Excellent knowledge of design patterns (OOP, DDD, BDD & TDD) and principles (SOLID & DRY).
  • An understanding of DevOps principles. Previous experience setting up CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS.
  • Understanding of test best practices using PHPUnit and Behat.

What you’ll be doing

As a Senior PHP Developer you will work alongside the other Engineers and Technical Leader to deliver secure and scalable solutions for the back-end of their core product. You will play an integral role on a variety of business-critical projects including the migration of their product suite to Symfony with AWS and microservices architecture. Working closely with the DevOps team to maintain the CI/CD pipelines you’ll be an advocate for TDD/DevOps approaches. Adhering to coding best practices you will be required to undertake code & architecture reviews and share your technical expertise with the wider team. With new & emerging tech being incorporated on a regular basis this is a role with great variety and scope for progression. Any Linux knowledge would be useful.  Any understanding of TCP/IP, Networking, HTTP, HTML is beneficial.  Database skills; SQL Server, MySQL, Postgres, SQLite etc.  Client-facing experience or ability to communicate clearly with external stakeholders.  As a multi-project and tech agnostic business, any awareness of the following would be super useful, but not essential; AWS, Azure, ML, JavaScript, Python, iOS/Android, PHP, Open Source. What you’ll be doing Joining the wider Engineering team with multi-project exposure, you’ll support the delivery of high-level projects across their global customer-base, primarily focused on the MS ecosystem but with exposure to things like Python, Java, C++ and more, meaning you’ll need to be comfortable learning new tech and adapting depending on the project. Some projects can last for 2+ years at a time but the typical lifecycle is 3-6 months before you’re re-deployed into a different area, creating a lot of variety and diverse tools/tech to be involved in. There’s typically 2-4 people on a project and the role tends to be quite customer-facing, so you’ll need to offer a consultative approach and ensure you understand and meet the briefs given throughout.
