CTO - Senior Material Scientist

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a CTO in a rapidly growing Biotech company that using food waste to develop bioplastics and innovative materials. The role will be based at the client’s Leeds Research & Development facility, managing to laboratories and establishing the pilot production plant.

They are looking for a trustworthy, collaborative and knowledgeable CTO to join our senior leadership team for the next phase of growth. The CTO will take responsibility for R&D activities to develop and manufacture innovative materials from lab scale, through to pilot trials, and full-scale deployments.

What you’ll be doing?

This is a varied role encompassing a broad range of responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Create technical roadmaps and overarching strategy to align technical activities with overall business goals whilst addressing agreed Objectives and Key Results.
  • Develop efficient tracking processes for monitoring performance, deliverable timelines and streamlining technical activities;
  • Enable the team to develop and grow our R&D capabilities, review existing equipment, resources and processes and implement changes/improvements where required;
  • Keep a keen eye on technical developments in markets of interest, working closely with the commercial team on developing and maintaining cutting edge value propositions;
  • Provide support to client engagements, develop and maintain strong relationships with our partners whilst actively pursuing key input from them;
  • Manage, support and mentor our technical teams (Product Development and Production) focusing on the engagement, motivation and growth of your colleagues as a team and individually;
  • Lead on developing the company’s IP strategy to ensure we maintain a cutting edge approach and competitive advantage;
  • Support writing grant applications and funding opportunities to accelerate development and decrease time to market;
  • Lead on organisational Health & Safety and accreditation.
What they are looking for?
  • A PhD and/or Masters degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, chemistry, or a related science field;
  • Extensive experience in a senior technical position within chemical, materials and science-related sector with a preference for those with experience in scale-up and deployment of innovative new products/solutions;
  • Experience managing, mentoring and guiding lab-based R&D teams;
  • Experience with computational modelling and sensitivity analysis of processes using software such as SuperPro or Aspen;
  • History of adaptable approach to project management and good delivery within constraints and resources of a small high growth company.

You'll work collaboratively with your team and the wider Do Nation team to shape how our tech team operates - you'll help develop our technical practices, embed Sprint and Agile methodologies firmly within the team, lead on our technical documentation process, and more! Importantly you’ll ensure that Do Nation remains an industry leader, delivering a truly scalable, robust platform that enterprises, SMEs, and individuals alike trust and love to use. What experience you’ll need to apply You'll work at a senior level scaling engineering and product teams, ideally with responsibility for B2B SaaS products/production-grade web applications. You have built or are committed to building diverse and inclusive teams, fostering a collaborative environment that is empowering, supportive and challenging. You’ll help your people do their best work. Initially, you will have the curiosity and deep background in product and technology that means you're not afraid to get your hands dirty, coding and working with the team to improve working methodologies and coding efficiencies. You’ll have a track record of managing remote teams that successfully ship high quality products with refined user experiences. Hands-on knowledge of Django & React (React desirable) You'll have a passion for climate action and will be excited by and aligned with our mission of making sustainable living mainstream.
