    Test Engineer

A tech company whose products are used by scientists and engineers from a range of industries and organizations around the world are looking to expand their testing team in Bristol (currently 10 with 50 spread across the company) by adding 2 new manual testers who want to become automation engineers, if that’s something you’re keen on then this could be a great opportunity.  What experience you’ll need Proven experience in manual testing. You will have worked in an agile environment. Experience of windows desktop applications would be preferable but training is provided. An interest in software/technology. Any programming experience in C#, VB, C++ or any OO language would be advantageous. Exposure to automation test principles would be beneficial. ISTQB is desirable. A relevant computing degree is also desirable but not essential. Ability to work closely with developers and engineering specialists. Good communication skills. You will be driven to learn and improve. What you’ll be doing As a member of a multi-disciplinary team you will contribute to the testing and documentation of software programs as part of the development of the companies range of products. You will provide the software and embedded software test specifications, test cases and test automation suites necessary to provide robust and reliable software. You’ll be working within the software team (projects are usually 2-3 developers and 1 tester) using agile methods, participating in sprint planning, sprint reviews and retrospectives. Estimate tasks, write test schedules, write and execute story tests. You will also automate new functional test cases and run automated regression tests. You’ll be contributing to software testing standards and policies under the direction of the lead test engineer and dev manager. Over time you will gain a lot of knowledge, you must be committed to the sprint most of the time but you will have the opportunity to learn automation and pick up some great new skills. Test Engineer needed for an award-winning tech consultancy in Central Bristol. Founded in the 90's, the business has grown to over 1400 people now with offices across the UK and over in the US. They boast an incredibly diverse range of clients spread across multiple sectors, offering scope to gain exposure to the retail, local/central government and technology industries to name a few. With a broad range of different projects to work on, you will find yourself learning new tech regularly with no day being the same.    What skills you'll need Proven awareness of automated testing using Selenium, Cucumber or Fitnesse, ideally in a commercial environment.  Experience of working in either a Java or C# environment.  Background & recent experience in manual testing.  Good understanding of at least one cloud platform (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Rackspace etc.). Proven track record of following Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) as well as TDD/BDD principles. Any understanding of continuous integration and delivery is highly beneficial (Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins).  What you'll be doing    Joining the Bristol delivery team, you will be working on a broad range of projects which spreads across an incredibly diverse client base with no day being the same. You will participate in regular stand-ups with the rest of the team, working with other engineers to understand the clients product architecture in order to design the most effective test automation tools for the particular project moving forward. Examples of recent projects include a web application suite for a public sector client, as well as a large web-based application for a leading retailer. Quality assurance is a key factor in the companys delivery model so collaboration is key; you will need to ensure you are building quality processes with a stress on exploratory testing, bug advocacy and automation. They’re currently investing heavily across their technology function and are looking to expand their Central Bristol office, with recent & significant investment received from one of their larger partners.  What experience you'll need Proven experience in a hands-on senior QA role with a good understanding of the SDLC and various 3rd party testing tools.  Familiar with PHP and an ability to read PHP code.  Good understanding of BDD, preferably with Behat but a similar tool would be great.  Test automation experience using Cucumber, Selenium or PHPUnit.  Ability to liaise with off-shore teams effectively.  A passion for accuracy; a Mathematics or data-driven background would be useful.  Understanding of JIRA would be very beneficial. What you'll be doing Joining a talented product team you will take the lead in putting together a test strategy for future apps within the business, as well as helping to bring older systems up to date. Working in a small team there will be a lot of 3rd party test management; it’s expected that you will look after all test plans, having an automation first mind-set in order to implement various testing processes into the software development lifecycle. You’ll take a lead on embedding testing practices into the SDLC and will need to engage with internal stakeholders - Product Owners, Testers, Developers to bring them on the journey with you. With a turnover of £400m+ and countless accolades including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the business are in growth mode at the moment with plans to build a brand-new testing function within their eCommerce team.  What skills you’ll need Proven experience as a hands-on QA/Test Lead, preferably in an eCommerce environment though this isn’t essential.  Working knowledge of manual & automated testing using at least one of the following: Selenium, Cucumber, Fitnesse, Specflow. Ability to build test strategies from scratch, as well as expertise in TDD/BDD principles, unit testing and configuration management.  Expertise in testing eCommerce websites would be highly beneficial though not essential. Significant understanding of Agile methodologies & continuous integration. Awareness of JIRA is useful too.  Comfortable working in a dynamic & changeable environment where adaptation is key.  What you’ll be doing The business doesn’t have a massive testing environment so the aim is to set up a brand-new testing function within the eCommerce team, with scope to grow a team around you. It’s expected that you’ll build the testing strategy from scratch, taking ownership of test environment provision and driving Agile best practices across the team. You will advocate continuous integration, introduce TDD/BDD and unit testing to more junior employees as well as offering expertise in configuration. The main aspect of this role is to look after the business’ range of eCommerce websites so any previous experience in a similar environment would be beneficial. Initially this role will be very hands-on but will evolve into more of an oversight position as the team expands around you. At this point you will take on line management responsibilities, mentoring other team members and creating a trusted delivery capability moving forwards. You will also play an integral part in keeping up to date with, and suggesting new and effective testing approaches and tools to bring into the company.
