The RPS is an educational charity committed to bringing photography to everyone.
The RPS is an educational charity committed to bringing photography to everyone.
The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) was founded in 1853 to promote the art and science of photography for the benefit of the public. It was granted Royal patronage by Queen Victoria, a Royal charter by Queen Elizabeth II, and HRH The Princess of Wales is its Patron. Since 1962 the RPS has been a registered charity with educational objectives.
As a membership organisation that celebrates diversity and inclusion, the subscription fees from approaching 11,000 UK and international members allows the RPS to deliver its charitable objectives. Membership is open to everyone, anywhere in the world. Whether they are an enthusiast or professional photographer, a photographic artist or an imaging scientist; the only requirement to become a member is a passion for photography.
We envision a world where everyone is inspired, empowered and educated in the art and science of photography.
The RPS is the earliest established international photographic society, and as the interests and needs of our members have evolved, so too has The RPS. However, our original aims of promoting the art and science of photography are as relevant today as they were back when we first formed.
Today our mission is to create a platform for photographers of all levels, giving them everything they need for their journey in photography.
Members can:
Our community cherishes existing and much-loved features of RPS membership, such as Distinctions (which enjoy worldwide respect); Exhibitions (including the longest-running international contemporary photography exhibition the International Photography Exhibition, now in its 166th edition); the award-winning RPS Journal; RPS Awards; Community groups and regions (powered by volunteers) and our far-reaching Education programmes.
