MotherBoard Speaker Feature – Jane John-Lewis

Ahead of our in-person event on May 18th, 4pm – 7pm “Mind the Gap: How Companies Can Close the Parent Divide in Tech” at MOO HQ in London, we had a chance to speak with one of our speakers, Jane John-Lewis, Robotic Medical Tech. Consultant at Intuitive Surgical.

A bit of background, who are you, what do you do and where do you work?

I am currently working as a Medical Technology Consultant predominantly in Surgical Robotics with a company called intuitive Surgical. I am also completing a professional doctorate of engineering in AI and Machine Learning. In my spare time, I run a property development company and I have recently co-founded an organisation called Brown Skin Girls Network where we work to elevate black women into and within positions of leadership.

Why is it so important for everyone to keep the topic of diversity in tech at the top of the agenda?

I feel it is important to keep the topic of diversity in tech on the top of the agenda because its something that is consistently overlooked and although may feature in conversational topics, rarely gets actioned. Until change is implemented this topic will continue to be an issue and the industry will lack in skillful talented individuals that can change the tech. space, but also improve their own communities.

What are you most looking forward to about the MotherBoard/ MOO event?

At the next Motherboard event, I am most looking forward to the opportunity to network with inspiring women. These environments help me build confidence in making great plans for a productive future.
