View profileAs part of the ‘Mums in Tech’ series, MotherBoard caught up with Arvy Thandi, Performance Engineer at Nationwide Building Society.
The purpose of our ‘MotherBoard’ content series is to highlight incredible working mums within tech, as well as individuals and businesses that are supportive and progressive within their approach to creating more inclusive tech teams for women.
I’m Arvinder Thandi, an Engineer at Nationwide Building Society. I work within a dynamic tech team, contributing to innovative solutions – particularly in Open Banking, which I find incredibly exciting. My role involves problem-solving, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and continuously learning to stay ahead in the ever-evolving tech landscape. Outside of work, I’m also a passionate baker, which gives me a creative outlet and a way to unwind.
It’s a daily balancing act of code and cuddles – challenging, rewarding, and constantly evolving.
It’s all about setting boundaries and being intentional with my time. I’ve learned to prioritise what truly matters, both at work and at home. Having a supportive team and manager makes a huge difference and I try to be fully present wherever I am – whether I’m doing forecasting or capacity planning at work or helping with homework.
One of the biggest challenges has been managing the internal pressure to excel in both roles simultaneously. There’s often a feeling that you need to prove yourself at work while also being the perfect parent at home. Learning to let go of perfection and embrace “good enough” has been a journey.
Motherhood has sharpened my multitasking, time management, and empathy skills. I’ve become more patient and better at prioritising, which translates directly into how I manage projects and collaborate with colleagues.
Having a clear and flexible return-to-work plan made a huge difference. Knowing that I had the support of my manager and team, and that I could ease back into work at a manageable pace, helped me regain confidence and find my rhythm again.
Flexibility is key!!! Whether that’s flexible hours, remote working options, or understanding that life happens. Creating a culture where parents feel supported and not penalised for their responsibilities outside of work is essential.
Don’t underestimate the value you bring to the table. Your experiences as a mother give you unique strengths – resilience, adaptability, and empathy – that are incredibly valuable in tech. Surround yourself with a supportive network, advocate for your needs, and remember: you’re doing an amazing job!! 🙂
MotherBoard is a Business Charter, Community & Event Series, driving tangible change for mums working in the tech industry.
