Life as a Digital Project Manager

Have you ever wondered what life as a Digital Project Manager is really like here in the South West? What does one do? What does it take to become one and what to stay top of the game?

We caught up with Aphra Kiely, Digital Project Manager at Mr B & Friends, to get the facts for you – regardless of whether you are thinking of becoming one or adding one to your team – some insights for you right here:

ADLIB: In approx. 30 words and plain English, what do you do?
Aphra Kiely: I manage the workflow of the digital team. This includes everything from prioritising and assigning tasks for the team, to managing the budget and timelines and checking and reviewing work. I’m also a key point of contact for clients.

ADLIB: In a nutshell, what has been your career journey so far?
Aphra Kiely: I studied Fine Art at university and was interested in how digital platforms could be used in the field of art. After my degree I worked in events management for a transmedia company and I was fascinated by how digital could be used to reach lots of audiences. My next step involved moving to Manchester where I worked for a brilliant small interactive agency who were incredibly supportive and really helped develop my skills in digital project management. My most recent move, three years ago, was back to Bristol. I researched companies in the area and applied for a job at the ones I liked most. I had four interviews in one day and was offered three jobs but I got a really good vibe from Mr B & Friends so I took this role.

ADLIB: What do you like most about your job?
Aphra Kiely: We have a great bunch of people working at the agency and I really enjoy working closely with the team and being involved throughout the process. And of course, it’s a good feeling when we push the mythical big red button and make a project live!

ADLIB: What are 3 key things you consider when choosing an employer?
Aphra Kiely:

  1. I think it’s important to find an employer that is going to nurture your talent and provide opportunities for you to progress.
  2. I definitely want to work with people who inspire me and I would look for that energy and aptitude.
  3. I also think you can’t underestimate choosing an employer that you get along with- we spend a lot of time at work so it’s important to enjoy yourself along the way!

ADLIB: What 3 top tips would you give someone to ensure that their skills and knowledge as a Digital Project Manager remain top notch?
Aphra Kiely:

  1. Don’t be scared to say you don’t know, it’s good to ask questions and you can learn a lot from the people around you. We run knowledge share sessions that are also a great way of getting access to useful insights.
  2. Follow industry experts on social media, sign up to interesting magazines and newsletters and check out who’s winning digital awards and what they’re winning those awards for. This can provide inspiration and help keep you up to date.
  3. It’s not essential for a digital project manager to know how to code but I did some courses to learn the basics so I could communicate better with my team and also be able to think of solutions.

Thank you Aphra for sharing!
