To be as effective as possible, they have decided to have managers who focus entirely on management – giving teams the best possible management experience. As a drug discovery people manager, you’ll take on management responsibilities for a group within the drug discovery team. They are a multidisciplinary group of molecular biologists, phage display scientists, protein scientists, cell biologists and protein engineers, working together with colleagues in the dry lab to revolutionise drug discovery. You’ll also collaborate with the Head of Discovery, Principal Scientist, and senior individual contributors (ICs) to set strategy and define the roadmap. What you’ll be doing: Manage a group of 6-8 people to ensure they’re happy, motivated, focused and delivering incredible work. Use regular 1:1s to provide continuous feedback, ensure peak performance and recognise the individual strengths and contributions of direct reports. Grow and develop individuals on the team, using mentorship, coaching and sponsorship to help them learn or show their skills. Collaborate with the Head of Discovery, Principal Scientist, and senior ICs to make tactical decisions, drive standards and practices for work. Diagnose and resolve people problems between and within teams. Bring your experience of early-stage drug discovery to provide scientific direction to the team. Work closely with the talent team to attract, hire, onboard, and retain high potential team members from diverse backgrounds. What experience you’ll need to apply? You will have a strong biology background and have worked as Scientist, ideally within Drug Discovery in Pharma or Biotechs. What we are looking for first and foremost is exceptional management skills. You have an empathetic leadership style, and you build strong, effective relationships. You have solid experience working in multi-disciplinary teams and are keen to experiment beyond basic practices and improve your team's ways of working further. Degree or higher in a Biology related field. You have significant experience leading, coaching, and mentoring scientists (4 reports). Nice to haves Experience of early-stage biologics (large molecule) drug discovery. This is an opportunity to join an exciting London based drug discovery innovator utilising machine learning to vastly improve the drug discovery process and produce more effective therapeutics worldwide. In line with growth, they are looking for a highly motivated molecular biologist driven by cutting-edge high throughput sequencing method development and execution. As part of the NGS team you will help to develop and run the sequencing workflows to establish genotype-phenotype links that we use for building machine learning models. You’ll work with their dynamic R&D teams to drive the discovery and development of protein therapeutics for unmet medical needs. Sequencing is core to their Platform, so you’ll ensure that they produce high-quality data, on time. What you’ll be doing:     Contribute to drug discovery projects by using short- and long-read sequencing technologies to analyse biologics repertoires as part of the directed evolution platform. Investigate, develop & onboard newly implemented or standard sequencing workflows and experimental techniques. Assist in planning the expansion of their internal sequencing capabilities. Strive to improve data quality and throughput by optimising established workflows from sample input to read output. QC analyse, interpret, and troubleshoot NGS runs working closely with the R&D teams. Mentor and support the training of technical and non-expert colleagues in NGS technologies. Collaborate with our Display, Data Science, Bioinformatic and Automation experts to help design protein libraries and screening strategies. Keep excellent experimental/data records for cross functional teamwork and project learnings. What experience you will need to apply:     A PhD in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or similar, or equivalent industry experience with significant expertise in NGS. The ability to generate and implement new ideas with excellent troubleshooting skills. Able to perform a wide range of molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation, multiplex PCR and RT. You’re comfortable with challenging yourself and acquiring unfamiliar scientific skills and knowledge. You have excellent organisational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to prioritise, define timelines and deliver to these commitments. Nice to have skills:   Previously worked with production-scale Illumina systems (NextSeq and above), or with TGS systems from other manufacturers (PacBio, Oxford Nanopore, etc), preferably employing laboratory automation. Experience in generation and analysis of amplicon sequencing and/or RNAseq data in directed evolution workflows. Developing strategies for immune repertoire e.g., TCR sequencing. Familiar with open-source software, bioinformatics tools and languages such as Python. How you enjoy working:   You’re comfortable with a rapid pace of work in a dynamic environment. This fast-growing Drug Discovery scale-up in London, is building a platform to discover revolutionary medicines using machine learning. They have exciting growth plans for the next 18 months and are looking for an experienced and passionate Senior Protein Characterisation Scientist to join them on their mission as they combine Machine Learning (ML), robotic automation and synthetic biology to evolve next-generation protein therapeutics.  They are looking for someone who has significant industrial experience in biotherapeutic protein characterisation and are looking for a role where you can have a real impact on how things are done. Your expertise will be put to use to establish high quality characterisation assays, increase our QC capabilities, as well as identify and define capability development requirements for future asset discovery programs. What you’ll be doing: Develop robust high- and low-throughput and assay capabilities to characterise our target and candidate proteins. Work with our automation team to automate and scale protein QC assays, ensuring high quality data generation suitable for machine learning and pre-clinical applications. Integrate protein QC data and your knowledge of sequence-based developability liabilities into our machine learning models, in an iterative design-build-test-learn process. Work closely with our internal Pipeline team to plan and review proposals for future projects, identifying priority areas for capability development within Protein Science. There will be opportunity for technical mentorship of less experienced members of the team - we’re keen to develop our skills and learn from the best! What experience you’ll need to apply: You’re passionate about protein characterisation and keen to remain hands-on in the lab. You’re an expert user of a range of industry-standard protein QC instruments and techniques. We’re particularly keen to hear from you if you have deep experience in SEC-UHPLC, LC-MS, DLS, or other similar biophysical QC techniques. You have a wealth of antibody engineering knowledge to share, with expertise in humanisation, half-life extension, forced stability studies, and other developability considerations. You enjoy shaking things up for the better, with experience of advocating for, implementing, and validating new protein characterisation technologies. You have a track record of successfully training and developing less experienced team members, raising standards across the team. You’re interested in or have previous experience of applying machine learning to tackle protein engineering challenges. Previous experience of upstream/downstream protein production or working with HTP protein production platforms will be highly advantageous, although not required. You will work within the University Labs in a commercial laboratory on an exciting new project to identify novel human tumour-specific antigens.What you'll be doing: Contributing to the design and piloting of the methodology and being responsible for the process applied to human tumour samples to isolate MHC complexes and purify associated immune-peptides for downstream MS analysis. Development of a high-throughput proteomics platform, including setup, method optimisation, implementation of QC workflows and efficient integration with downstream data analysis. Human Tissue Sample Preparation. Technology development for HLA peptidomics including new strategies and methodologies for target identification and characterisation using a diverse set of biochemistry and mass spectrometry techniques. MS-based peptide identification and data visualisation. Data Analytics and Preparation. What experience you will need to apply: Science based degree (Biochemistry or Molecular Biology preferred), ideally PhD. Previous experience working with protein and peptide purification and analysis. Prior experience in purifying MHC complexes and MHC-associated. Work hand-in-hand with data and wet lab scientists to design and deliver cutting edge protein engineering solutions. You will have a deep technical background in protein engineering, exemplified by a high-impact publication record and presentations at conferences. Experience of working with single domain antibodies and multivalent therapeutics. In particular knowledge of protein engineering for oncology therapeutics. Experience of leading and developing teams in a matrix environment. Excellent communication skills – able to explain complex ideas to non-experts. A knowledge and understanding of the use of advanced in silico protein design methodology. Experience of lab automation and running experiments at high throughput.  Nice to haves You know how to work effectively within a startup organisation.
