The role will be based at the client’s Leeds Research & Development facility, managing to laboratories and establishing the pilot production plant.They are looking for a trustworthy, collaborative and knowledgeable CTO to join our senior leadership team for the next phase of growth. The CTO will take responsibility for R&D activities to develop and manufacture innovative materials from lab scale, through to pilot trials, and full-scale deployments. What you’ll be doing?This is a varied role encompassing a broad range of responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, the following: Create technical roadmaps and overarching strategy to align technical activities with overall business goals whilst addressing agreed Objectives and Key Results. Develop efficient tracking processes for monitoring performance, deliverable timelines and streamlining technical activities; Enable the team to develop and grow our R&D capabilities, review existing equipment, resources and processes and implement changes/improvements where required; Keep a keen eye on technical developments in markets of interest, working closely with the commercial team on developing and maintaining cutting edge value propositions; Provide support to client engagements, develop and maintain strong relationships with our partners whilst actively pursuing key input from them; Manage, support and mentor our technical teams (Product Development and Production) focusing on the engagement, motivation and growth of your colleagues as a team and individually; Lead on developing the company’s IP strategy to ensure we maintain a cutting edge approach and competitive advantage; Support writing grant applications and funding opportunities to accelerate development and decrease time to market; Lead on organisational Health & Safety and accreditation. What they are looking for? A PhD and/or Masters degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, chemistry, or a related science field; Extensive experience in a senior technical position within chemical, materials and science-related sector with a preference for those with experience in scale-up and deployment of innovative new products/solutions; Experience managing, mentoring and guiding lab-based R&D teams; Experience with computational modelling and sensitivity analysis of processes using software such as SuperPro or Aspen; History of adaptable approach to project management and good delivery within constraints and resources of a small high growth company. What experience you’ll need to apply?     5 to 10 years R&D experience in industry, ideally with significant biotechnology product development experience. Proven application of analytical methods throughout production, post-production processing and long-term storage for product yield and stability improvement. A broad understanding of biotechnology and its potential application to control or change microbiomes, an understanding of CRISPR, genetic transformation and the regulatory environment for biotech products. What experience you’ll need to apply: You’re passionate about protein characterisation and keen to remain hands-on in the lab. We’re particularly keen to hear from you if you have deep experience in SEC-UHPLC, LC-MS, DLS, or other similar biophysical QC techniques. You have a wealth of antibody engineering knowledge to share, with expertise in humanisation, half-life extension, forced stability studies, and other developability considerations. You enjoy shaking things up for the better, with experience of advocating for, implementing, and validating new protein characterisation technologies. You have a track record of successfully training and developing less experienced team members, raising standards across the team. You’re interested in or have previous experience of applying machine learning to tackle protein engineering challenges. What experience you’ll need to apply: You’ll have a PhD or relevant industrial experience, with a strong scientific background and extensive practical experience in immuno-oncology/ T cell biology. Experience in flow cytometry, cell-based ELISA, cell viability assays, cell-based screening assays for preclinical drug discovery & functional validation. You are aware of the state of the art in laboratory automation with practical experience of running liquid handling robots. You are always looking to develop new ways of automating and standardising science. You will be a subject matter expert on cell based assays and how they can support drug discovery. You’ll have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with specialists from your own and other fields (e.g. automation engineers, NGS and data scientists). As an experienced mentor, you’ll have a track record of training more junior team members. You'll have a working knowledge of biological drug discovery platforms, with experience of antibody drug developability a distinct advantage.
